Twenty-two

I escort the girls back to the SUV, my instincts screaming at me to get them the fuck out of there, not just Vivian, Ray too. I had a feeling she was somehow tied into all of this. How? I didn’t know.

Her face is void of any colour, that spark I saw in her eyes earlier diminished and I fucking hated it. I hated that despite her cool exterior, she was terrified. Of a man hiding behind a computer. And if I knew anything about Ray, she wasn’t afraid for herself. She was afraid for Vivian and Harper and Oli. She’d already been the target of his anger once, the chances are she wouldn’t be again, no, the fucker will likely go after one of the other girls now to prove a point.

“Can you get hold of Harper and Oli?” I ask after I climb in the front seat, “Just tell them to keep an eye out and call the cops if they see anything suspicious.”

Ray nods and begins to tap away on her phone as I pull into the heavy LA traffic.

As I drive I notice a car has been tailing us since we pulled away from the café. A simple black sedan but the front screen is completely tinted and with the glare of the afternoon sun, it’s impossible to see the driver. I turn a corner, they follow and again at the end of the street.

“Shit,” I murmur, I don’t want to worry the girls. “Looks like road works,” I lie, “I’m just going to take a detour.”

I need to figure out if this guy is actually a tail. I mean the chances of another car going in the exact same direction is pretty slim, but this could also be my paranoia getting the better of me.

“Road works?” Ray questions, “I didn’t realise they were doing work down here. Nothing is posted.”

I shrug, “Perhaps they forgot.”

Yeah right. I’m going to need to lie better than that.

“Maybe,” Ray answers, narrowing her eyes at me.

Yeah sweetheart, I know. I’m a shitty liar.

I divert to the highway, heading away from the city and come off the slip to circle back round. The car stays on my heels.

Fuck.

Definitely following us.

I lean back in my chair and flick my eyes to the mirrors, trying to check for plates but of course, there are none.

“Where are you going?” Ray leans forward, placing herself between the seats. Her shoulder brushes mine and I feel her eyes boring into the side of my face.

God did she need to be such a distraction.

“Detour,” I shrug nonchalantly.

Without another choice I head towards the offices, keeping one eye on the car behind us. When we pull up and park, I throw myself out, ready to take on whoever it is but instead of coming to a stop with me, they speed on by, too quick for me to get a good look at the driver.

“What’s your problem?” Ray comes around to my side of the car, her hands planted on her hips.
